Oil - Key findings

In 2007, oil was discovered in commercial quantities in the Tano Basin, located offshore Cape three Point in the Western Region of Ghana. This discovery gave birth to the renowned Jubilee Field which began production in 2010. Subsequently, additional fields namely Tweneboah, Enyenra & Ntomme (TEN) and Sankofa-Gye Nyame (SGN) were discovered and developed. Crude oil production has averaged 112,782 barrels per day over the last ten years with a cumulative oil production of about 453,556,277 barrels. Continuous exploration is however ongoing to discover more oil for the country. Currently, there are three refineries that process crude oil into the various petroleum products in the country. However, the country is heavily reliant on import of finished products constituting more than 80% of total petroleum product consumption of the country. Petroleum product consumption has increased by three folds above the 2000’s level of 1,442 ktoe. The transport sector remains the main consumer of petroleum products. This trend is expected to continue in the foreseeable future. Efforts are, however, being made to increase the adoption and use of electric vehicles in the country.
