Natural Gas - Key findings
The use of natural gas in electricity generation commenced in 2009 with the coming online of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) and subsequently the availability of indigenous gas from three fields namely; Jubilee, Tweneboa, Enyenra & Ntomme (TEN) and Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) fields. Natural gas produced in Ghana comprises associated and non-associated with associated gas from all three fields and non-associated gas from OCTP. Natural gas has become the main fuel used by thermal power plants for electricity generation, increasing its consumption by about eight-folds over the last decade. Natural gas is also gaining prominence in industrial processes. In order to provide fuel security to meet the nation’s growing energy demand for power generation and industrial purposes, a Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) terminal is being constructed at Tema and is envisaged to receive, store, re-gasify and deliver roughly 1.7 million tonnes of LNG annually.
